There’s a free event just outside of Cashiers, North Carolina every February called the Great Sapphire Valley Resort Outhouse Races. The race is a charity event to benefit the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society. Local clubs and businesses build outhouses on skis and parade them through the crowd like homecoming floats. Then outhouses race in heats of two in what appears to be a double-elimination tournament. It’s all very light-hearted and everyone has a great time.
Volunteers sell chili, hot dogs, and burgers and kids can buy lift tickets and ski down the hill prior to the races. I don’t know what’s more entertaining; watching the outhouses collide and tip over or watching the guys at the bottom of the slope try to stop the wobbly missiles. It was fun for everyone involved, and I highly recommend it if you’re in the area. Here’s a quick video of one of the races down the bunny slope of Sapphire Valley ski area.
Check the website to find the date for this year’s event. If you like spending time in the area, I recommend the book, Haunted Hills: Ghosts and Legends of Highlands and Cashiers, North Carolina.
