Cedar Creek Falls & Blue Hole Falls

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, South Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 0

This area is a diamond in the rough. I really wish the forestry service would make this area more accessible to hikers. They already do a wonderful job of keeping these service roads passable, but a volunteer work weekend would … Continued

I've been to Square Top Lakes before, but I only saw the first lake. I decided I would get some exercise and make it to the second lake this time. It was 38° when I got started, but I was enjoying the sunshine on the second longest day of the year.
I was having a great hike when I passed the first lake and started making my way uphill to the second. I was engrossed in my *audiobook and finally snapped out of my trance when I realized that this was like doing the Manitou Incline all over again. That's when I realized that the first lake I saw was really the second lake and I was accidentally summiting a 13er. I figured, "what the hell else do I have to do today?" So I made my way to the top and grabbed a video quickly because my fingers were numb.
I spend enough time in the wilderness that you'd think I'd be better at orienteering. Then again, the goal is to have fun and I had plenty of it.
*The audiobook is The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England by Brandon Sanderson.

I just finished another loop through the Lost Creek Wilderness. It was supposed to be around 25 miles, but I teased that up to over 28 miles when I accidentally walked right past the side trail to the parking lot and started the loop again. 🤷‍♂️
This place was absolutely picturesque. At least 12 of these miles wound me through meadows with ponds and wildflowers. I will definitely get back when the mud has dried and the bugs are dying out in the fall.

This is the White River National Forest near Keystone in Colorado. It's not hard to believe this is all snow melt this time of year. What was hard to believe was the impressive number of people I saw skiing/boarding in 60° weather at A-Basin this morning.
