Lower Bearwallow Falls

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, North Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 0

Lower Bearwallow Falls is a 55-foot waterfall in Gorges State Park in North Carolina. When most people think of Gorges, they think of Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls. But there’s another parking area near Frozen Creek with trails that connect … Continued

Standing Indian Mountain Loop (25 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Appalachian Trail, Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails | 8

The Standing Indian Mountain Loop is a moderate 25-mile hike that mostly follows the Appalachian Trail (AT) as it makes a semi-circle around the Nantahala Basin. I usually avoid the AT in the warmer months, but I thought that early … Continued

Appalachian Trail & Bartram Trail Loop (58 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Appalachian Trail, Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails | 6

I spent most of January fighting off head and chest colds, so I wanted to get out in February and grind out some miles. I considered several trails, but the lack of car shuttling tipped the scales in favor of … Continued

Dismal Falls

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, North Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 0

The Dismal Creek area is tucked away in western North Carolina, not too far from Panthertown Valley. The trail—and I use that term loosely—features 4 waterfalls. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s a little under 2½ miles from … Continued

9-Waterfall Panthertown Valley Loop (15 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 2

I’ve hiked just about all of Panthertown Valley in both directions. It’s a beautiful area that mostly features easy to moderate hiking. There are a few strenuous sections of trail, but they’re avoided with this loop except for the short … Continued

Weekend camping at Twin Falls (Pisgah National Forest)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Backpacking, Hiking, North Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 2

As I’ve said before, I’m more of a hiker than a camper. Even though hikers camp and campers hike, the best part of backpacking for me is the walking. I don’t blog most of my backpacking trips because I start … Continued

Silvermine Bald Overlook

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Art Loeb Trail, Attractions, Hiking, North Carolina, Trails | 0

I’ve been to Silvermine Bald Overlook a few times. The first time was during my first Art Loeb Trail thru-hike when I randomly stumbled upon it. The leaves were changing and I was stunned at the unexpectedly alpine landscape. View … Continued

This is the White River National Forest near Keystone in Colorado. It's not hard to believe this is all snow melt this time of year. What was hard to believe was the impressive number of people I saw skiing/boarding in 60° weather at A-Basin this morning.

I'm 97% certain this little guy thinks he's leading me through the wilderness so I don't get lost. Either that or he brings me along to dispense bacons every hour on the hour. 🥓⌛

I finally got around to visiting the Devil's Head Fire Lookout this morning. I got there at 7:00 am and was still probably an hour too late to avoid the beginning of the crowds. Next time, I would do a pre-sunrise hike and catch the dawn from the fire tower.
