Bridal Veil Falls is a waterfall that hangs over the shoulder of US HWY 64 just north of Highlands, North Carolina. People line up in the warmer months to get a picture of themselves driving their cars beneath the overhang. It’s a fun little aside if you’re already traveling through the area. There’s really not much to this site. It’s in the Nantahala National Forest and the area is beautiful, if remote. I’ve driven under the falls, but I can’t find that picture anywhere. Instead, I give you a picture of the falls frozen over.
This is not to be confused with the Bridal Veil Falls in DuPont State Forest, whose cascade was used to film the famous “stay alive” (YouTube) scene in the film, The Last of the Mohicans.
If you’re in Highlands around mealtime, walk a few doorways down from the Old Edwards Inn to Mountain Fresh Grocery. There’s something for everyone. You won’t be disappointed. Oh, and ladies, you won’t fit in around Highlands unless you wear those large, floppy hats that make everyone look like they just stepped out of the latest issue of Southern Living.
