Happy Cow Creamery is a fun little excursion if you happen to find yourself between Greenwood and Greenville, South Carolina. It’s a locally-owned dairy with an on-the-farm milk bottling plant that’s open to the public. You can bring your kids to see the cows. The owners have 1-hour tour that takes you all over the farm. They’re happy to tell you all about the life and health of the cows as well as sustainability measures they’ve taken. The onsite store sells homemade dairy products, including butter, cheese, ice cream, and meats. They also sell raw milk, which few states allow. I buy raw Happy Cow milk occasionally to make homemade mozzarella and ricotta cheese. The ultra pasteurization of other brands keeps the curds and whey from separating.
If you don’t have the kids in tow, you can swing a few miles over to the City Scape Winery. They have a selection of locally made wines you can try. I’m not a fan of very sweet wines, which are commonly produced in the southeast, but they have some drier vintages as well.
