Black Mountain Crest Trail to Mt Mitchell (10.8 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, North Carolina, Trails | 0

Mt Mitchell is the highest summit east of the Mississippi River. The area offers the standard features of a state park (stores, restrooms, picnic tables, campsites, restaurant, etc). Like Clingman’s Dome, the vast majority of visitors drive to a parking … Continued

Turnpike Creek Beach

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Attractions, Hiking, North Carolina | 0

I stumbled upon Turnpike Creek Beach while hiking a patchwork loop through the Shining Rock Wilderness. I camped near the Ivestor Gap/Art Loeb Trail intersection. After breaking camp the next morning, I took the Fork Mountain Trail north to this … Continued

Cathedral Falls

Cathedral Falls is a unique waterfall just off Highway 215 in North Carolina. I usually don’t blog about locations that are on private property, but the landowners here welcome sightseers. The land is owned by Living Waters, a Christian Retreat … Continued

Cataloochee Valley Loop (31.5 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, Tennessee, Trails | 0

I’ve been meaning to visit the Cataloochee Valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) for years. I tried to spend a weekend there in the fall of 2016, but wildfires resulted in temporary road and park closures. I’m not … Continued

The Poinsett Bridge is a relic of a bygone era when traveling across mountain ranges took weeks rather than hours. Poinsett Bridge is the oldest bridge in South Carolina and perhaps in the entire southeastern United States. Named for Joel … Continued

Just finished a weekend camping trip in southern Colorado. We got to drive the famous #MillionDollarHighway and grab a beer and some BBQ in Silverton.
The #OurayPerimeterTrail was the most rewarding short hike I have ever done. You climb up into the mountains (often on the edge of a cliff) and walk completely around the entire valley town of Ouray. It was absolutely spectacular. The foliage was in peak colors and the temperature was perfect.
It's easy to see why Ouray is called the "Switzerland of the Americas." We got very lucky with this trip.
The next time we go, Jenny said that she will spend the morning at a day spa while I climb the #OurayViaFerrata. Click the hashtag to see what I'm talking about. 😉

Some photos from our trip to Rainbow Lakes in Indian Peaks Wilderness over the weekend. We also visited some of our favorite places to see the Aspen trees.
