Mount Galbraith Loop (4 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Colorado, Hiking, Loops, Trails | 0

Mount Galbraith Loop is a 4-mile trail that circles the summit of Mt Galbraith in Golden, Colorado. It’s technically a lasso hike, meaning that you take part of the trail to the loop and then backtrack to the parking lot. … Continued

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Art Loeb Trail, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 0

I have hiked this area pretty thoroughly. I’ve done the Art Loeb Trail in sections both ways and have thru-hiked it twice. Last time, I day-hiked it in 13 hours. I’ve done Cat Gap and John Rock. So imagine my … Continued

Standing Indian Mountain Loop (25 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Appalachian Trail, Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails | 6

The Standing Indian Mountain Loop is a moderate 25-mile hike that mostly follows the Appalachian Trail (AT) as it makes a semi-circle around the Nantahala Basin. I usually avoid the AT in the warmer months, but I thought that early … Continued

Rainbow Falls (Jones Gap State Park)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, South Carolina, Trails, Waterfalls | 0

Most people who visit Jones Gap State Park stroll the gently ascending Jones Gap Trail to Jones Gap Falls. It’s an easy, scenic pathway alongside the Middle Saluda River and is child- and pet-friendly. The park features a ranger station … Continued

Appalachian Trail & Bartram Trail Loop (58 miles)

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Appalachian Trail, Backpacking, Hiking, Loops, North Carolina, Trails | 6

I spent most of January fighting off head and chest colds, so I wanted to get out in February and grind out some miles. I considered several trails, but the lack of car shuttling tipped the scales in favor of … Continued

Looking Glass Rock Sub-Summit Overlook

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, North Carolina, Trails | 0

I’ve hiked Looking Glass Rock many times. It’s the hike I take people on when they’re in the area and want to see a spectacle. I mostly do it for exercise. The climb up and back down demands 3400 feet … Continued

Table Rock Summit

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Hiking, South Carolina, Trails | 0

I’ve hiked most of the trails in Table Rock State Park, but I somehow managed to avoid climbing to the 3124-foot summit of the mountain. I think it was always too crowded compared to neighboring Pinnacle Mountain and Caesars Head. … Continued

by Chad Chandler | posted in: Art Loeb Trail, Hiking, North Carolina, Trails | 0

Most posts to this site involve the travelog, but some simpler experiences demand be shared as well. As I’ve said before, Black Balsam Knob is one of my favorite places. I’m in the Shining Rock Wilderness often because of all … Continued

Walls Of Jericho is a steeply walled river valley near Scottsboro, Alabama. I learned about it years ago, but I’m rarely in that area. I took the long way from Birmingham, Alabama back to Greenville, South Carolina after Christmas 2016 … Continued

Just finished a weekend camping trip in southern Colorado. We got to drive the famous #MillionDollarHighway and grab a beer and some BBQ in Silverton.
The #OurayPerimeterTrail was the most rewarding short hike I have ever done. You climb up into the mountains (often on the edge of a cliff) and walk completely around the entire valley town of Ouray. It was absolutely spectacular. The foliage was in peak colors and the temperature was perfect.
It's easy to see why Ouray is called the "Switzerland of the Americas." We got very lucky with this trip.
The next time we go, Jenny said that she will spend the morning at a day spa while I climb the #OurayViaFerrata. Click the hashtag to see what I'm talking about. 😉
